Mayoral and Deputy Mayoral election – statement by candidates
I am proposing that Councillors wishing to stand for Mayor or Deputy Mayor be given the opportunity as part of proceedings to address Council on their reasons for seeking that position"
I believe that it is important that Councillors and the public know the intentions of candidates for these positions.
Following the pending review of the Local Government Act and in particular the expectation that structural, governance, strategic and performance frameworks will be included; it is appropriate to adopt via a mayoral minute the following recommendation leading into a new era for Local Government.
The Local Government Act’s Task Force recommendations include:
· A two year mayoral term for Councillor elected Mayors
· Oath of office and
· Ongoing professional training for Councillors
I believe candidates need to be able to show their credentials to take on, what is becoming a much more complex and demanding position of mayor and likewise , the position of deputy mayor.
To adopt this motion leading into a potential two year mayoral term from 2016 is therefore appropriate.
That Councillors wishing to stand for the positon of Mayor or Deputy Mayor be given the opportunity as part of Mayoral and Deputy Mayoral election proceedings to address Council on their reasons for seeking that position.
